Arch culvert
Culvert, screen and outfall manual, (CIRIA C786) published by CIRIA in 2019, defines a culvert as: 'A covered channel or pipe which prevents the obstruction of a watercourse or drainage path by an artificial construction.'
It defines an arch culvert a: ‘The most common form of culvert construction for river, road, canal, and railway culverts until the mid-19th century. Can be arched, or egg-shaped. For smaller widths, these may be masonry/brick channel side walls capped with a simply-supported slab roof. For larger spans, masonry arches predominate with corrugated steel and reinforced concrete used from the mid-19th century.’
